Where Learning Begins

Parent Roles & Responsibilities

Parents are an integral component of their child’s success while in Nativity School’s Resource Specialist Program. The BEST (Building Educational Strategies Together) parent support group will host various events and will work in coordination with PEN (Parents Education Network) to inform you about pertinent educational information, innovations & research, strategies, and upcoming events.

Parents are:
1.	expected to attend mandatory meetings and conferences.
2.	required to keep a record of their child’s psycho-educational testing and evaluations. (Documentation must be kept current – every 3 years).
3.	Encouraged to maintain regular contact with their child’s teachers.
4.	Keep Nativity School and the Resource Specialist informed of any situations which may impact their child’s school performance

Most of all, PARENTS are encouraged to:

Provide a quiet place and set time for study and daily homework.
Attend school events, conferences, rallies, and class parties.
Review their daily school projects and activities.
Endorse and support our Catholic Christian values and school discipline code.
Note your child’s progress and display their work at home.
Take time to work with your child every day.
Send your child to school on time, well rested, and prepared.

Curriculum & Assessments

Students participating in the RSP Program will be provided the same core curriculum materials as their classmates. However the RS will incorporate various interventions and strategies to help students meet their individual learning goals. Students who are pulled-out of the classroom for resource will not be required to do “make up” assignments. In addition, the RSP program will utilize multisensory teaching techniques and research-based strategies and curriculum to enhance the core lessons. The RS may administer strategic educational assessments to gather information about each child’s specific learning style. Students may be referred for further testing.

PEN History
The Parents Education Network was started in 2001 by the parents of LD children working together with the administration of Charles Armstrong School. The basic premise of the network is that parents and educators must work collaboratively to help LD children understand their strengths and how they learn best.

PEN Premises
The child suffers if the parent-school relationship is adversarial instead of collaborative.
Understanding LD is the key to a good partnership between the parents and school.
Parents can’t teach educators, they can only teach other parents.
Educators must teach educators.

Please consider joining PEN if you do not already belong. Workshops on various issues are offered year-round through PEN. Nativity School has a PEN school membership, but families can join individually. PEN offers a sliding scale membership. Mrs. Laura Claude is our PEN liason. Please contact her with any questions regarding PEN.
