2nd Grade

Welcome to 2nd Grade
Dear Parents,
I hope this message finds you well. I know October is a busy month and I thought it was necessary to touch base with you about what is going on in our classroom. The second graders have been busy writing ghost stories, pumpkin poems, learning about bats, and reading stories that consist of fables and silly stories. We have also been reviewing long and short vowel sounds, as you have seen from our spelling word lists. I have also been sending home our Daily Oral Language packets. These packets are guiding our studies on sentence structure and basic phonemic skills.
Our math curriculum has been reviewing the students’ addition and subtraction skills. It is important that these skills are reviewed constantly at home. I will continue to send home the children’s mental math t ests and their dragon awards, as this is important for them to show you and be proud of. We have begun our studies of place value and rounding this week. I have copied some math websites below that I have found to be useful for reinforcing the skills in which we are studying in class.

It is also important that I note: THERE IS NOT A 1ST COMMUNION MEETING NEXT WEEK. This was not supposed to appear on the calendar. There will be a meeting in January and it will be heavily advertised. I understand that ample notice is necessary so that babysitters can be scheduled. Also, we are finishing up our reading level and fluency testing this week. As we will begin our literature circles when we return from winter break. I am looking forward to meeting with each of you during parent- teacher conferences to further discuss the success of each of your children.
It is important for you to know that we have been busy learning so many wonderful things in the past months and that each student is performing at such an amazing level. We have been blessed with a wonderful class that truly cares about each others successes. It is a true joy to teach your children each day.

Thank You,
Ms. Freitas
