| Dear Parents: |
| 1.
ASH WEDNESDAY:
Next
Wednesday, February 17, is Ash Wednesday. We will celebrate the
beginning of Lent at a school Mass at 9 a.m. at Church of the
Nativity. Grades 1 and 8 will be coordinating the Mass and as
always, parents are welcome to attend. Lent is a powerful
opportunity for renewal. We all have a chance to make resolutions
about prayer, fasting, almsgiving and to translate those resolutions
into commitments. Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. The law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fasting or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation. During Lent, the Church encourages attendance at daily Mass, self-imposed times of fasting, and generosity to local, national, and worldwide programs of sharing. |
