Dear Parents:

1.  PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES:  Enclosed in this week's envelope is a letter regarding Parent-Teacher Conference Week, which is scheduled for November 9-13.  Please read the letter and respond with your 1st and 2nd choices by Friday, October 23.  The reports cards will be sent home Monday, November 9, with your child.  Report cards should be returned at the time of conference.

2.  NATIVITY SCHOOL APPEAL:  By now, you have all received your Appeal letter.  We are fortunate to have Natalie Barrales, Nativity Class of 2000, as our Alumna guest speaker at each Mass on Sunday, October 25.  Remember all contributions are greatly appreciated to continue making Nativity affordable for all.

3.  HARVEST FESTIVAL:  The weather is getting chillier and the days are getting shorter.  Fall must be in the air!  PTG is celebrating the season by presenting the Harvest Festival 2009 this Sunday, October 25th, after the 9:30 Family Mass.  Come join us for a pancake breakfast and lots of fun.  See the school website for more details.

4. GRADE 2 PARENTS:  Please note calendar change.  There is no First Communion Parent Meeting on Thursday evening, October 22.

5.  PARENTS EDUCATION NETWORK:  Nativity is a member school of Parents Education Network.  This group provides parent education and support, professional development and training for parents and teachers, and student support and mentoring through SAFE Voices.  Their mission is: education, collaboration, and empowerment.  The PEN speaker series is available to Nativity parents with deep discounted prices.  Some upcoming events are:
A book reading with Joan Ryan, author of "The Water Giver" 10/29 at St. Pius 7PM (free or suggested donation of $10)
"The Science of Exercise and the Brain" by John G. Ratey, MD 11/16 at Burke's School in San Francisco.
More information is available on their website:  http://www.parentseducationnetwork.org.

6.  FLU SEASON:  Attached is the first in a series of bulletins regarding the flu season.  We are hoping to provide information and suggestions on prevention.

7.  ART IN ACTION FALL SHOW:  Congratulations to the following students who are being featured in the Art In Action Fall Show at the Menlo Park Library:  Ryan Brouchoud, Lindsay Badgett, Virginia Aldridge, Andre Abad, Dorothy Aldridge, Mavis Warner, Arrin Skelley and Phyllis Tameilau.  Their work was selected out of all the 2008-2009 completed AIA projects!  Please stop by the library to admire their work on display until November 13th.

8.  HALLOWEEN PARADE:  Grades K-8 may dress up for the Halloween Parade on Friday, October 30, at 1:30 p.m.  We want to continue our philosophy of supporting non-violence and respect for human life.  The following is a reminder of the guidelines for acceptable costumes for our Halloween Parade:  no weapons, no costumes that represent a character that is macabre or gory, and no excessive make-up.  The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. going through each of the classrooms.  We will exit from the 8th grade outside doors and move onto the big grass area  in a huge circle, then return to the classrooms.  Dismissal is at 3 p.m.

9.  BASKETBALL SIGN-UPS:  Enclosed are basketball sign-up forms.  All forms and fees to participate in basketball -- girls and boys, grades 4-8 -- must be in by October 30 .  Basketball forms are due 10/30, no exceptions!

10.  NO BULLY WEEK UPDATE:  Thank you to all our parents who attended a very informative No Bully workshop presented by Nicholas Carlisle last Wednesday evening. Your participation was phenomenal.  All who attended were able to take home strategies to help your children's self esteem.  Nicholas also gave scenarios for group discussion on various examples of bullying which was extremely beneficial.  We also enjoyed the student workshop given by Soul Shoppe of San Francisco last Thursday.  Our students will benefit by additional workshops in February and April.  Student Council judged each classroom and office door on October 16th.  The awards presented were as follows:  Most Creative - 1st Grade; Most Colorful - 3rd Grade; Best Message - Mrs. Trelut and Mrs. Schaukowitch; Best Effort - Kindergarten; Best Presentation - Mrs. Hanley and Mrs. Cassidy; Most Fun - 2nd Grade; Most Artistic - 7th Grade; Most Organized - 4th Grade; Most Environmental - 6th Grade; Most Spiritual - 5th Grade; Most Influential - 8th Grade.

11 KEPLER'S BOOK FAIR:  Nativity School will be hosting a Kepler's Book Fair in our Library, Tuesday October 27 through Friday, October 30, 8:00-3:30 p.m.  There will be an adult book club coffee Thursday, October 29th in the Library at 8:15 a.m.  A Kepler's representative will give a talk about the most recent book club books that will be available for purchase at the fair.  Kepler's book fairs focus on literature of the highest quality.  Nativity School is proud to host this fair in order to help promote a solid reader.  Reading is the foundation to academic success.  20% of total sales from the book fair will benefit Nativity School.   If you are unable to make it to the fair, you may shop on-line using the Kepler's link on the Nativity School website, www.nativityschool.com.  Each time you shop at Kepler's please mention Nativity School and Kepler's donates 10% back to the school each quarter.  Mrs. Christa Enns is in desperate need of more volunteers Tuesday through Friday.  We have enough volunteers for set up.  Please refer to our school website attachments for time slots and contact Christa at ennsnocal@comcast.net.

12. GRADE 8 PARENTS:  Please note calendar change due to a conflict with St. Francis High School.   Grade 8 Confirmation Parent Meeting has been changed to Wednesday, November 18, 7 p.m., in the O'Hare Center
