Albrecht
Durer
A Famous Renaissance Painter
Background Information
On May 21, 1471 Albrecht
Durer
and Barbara Holler gave birth to their second child, Albrecht Durer
Junior.
Barbara and Abrecht senior came from Hungary so their name was changed
from
Thurer to Durer. When Durer turned 15 years old he apprenticed
with
Michael Wolgemut. Wolgemut taught him painting, engraving, and some
copper engraving. Along with Wolgemut he apprenticed with his
father who was
a goldsmith. In 1490, he left Wolgemut for Martin Schongauera
respected
painter engraver, unfortunately he became informed that he had died the
year before. Luckily, Schongauers family took him in and taught
him metal
designs and wood furnishing.
He
fell
in love in 1494 and then he married Agnes Frey his love. He
carved
The Apocalypse in 1498, a extremely famous wood-block printing.
Also,
from about 1510-11 he created Little Passion, another big and famous
hit.
He died about 18 years later, on April 6 1528.
How
did
Durer Contribute to the Renaissance?
Durer was one of
the
first painters to use the printing press in their artwork. His
emotionally
deep paintings and engravings influenced many of the artists and
regular
people during the Renaissance. The Apocalypse became well known
around
Europe, and people thought of it as as very influential piece.
Durer
was one of the most famous wood block printers, and he influenced a lot
of
future artists.
How
does
Durer influence us today?
Many people
today
have his paintings hung their houses as decorations. He also may
have
influenced many other artists who gave us the ideas for different types
of
architecture. Third, during art class, we might look at his art
