Dante and his father were both White Guelfs. Dante met Beatrice Portinari when he was nine years old and he fell in love with her at first sight. He barely talked to her, but after 18 they talked more often. Beatrice would be his reson for living and poetry. He focused more on Latin literature when Beatrice died in 1290. The theme of love in poetry would be used more than ever because of Dante.

                                                                                       Connection with Government
He had a well known family that were loyal to the Guelphs and the Ghibelliness(a political alliance). In 1289 the Guelfs beat the Ghibelliness and the Guelfs split into the White and Black Guelfs. A group of Black Guelfs were entering Florence and Dante had to pay a big amount of money and was sentanced to two years of exile. Dante was sentanced to exile forever because he couldn't pay the fine. Him and the White Guelfs tried to take their power back, but didn't manage to do so because of treason.
