Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in a farmhouse in Anchiano, Italy. His father was a public notary and his mother was the daughter of a farmer. Because of the big difference in social class his father left and remarried. Da Vinci stayed in Anchiano until he was five and then moved to Vinci. When Leonardo was 14 he moved with his father to Florence and became apprentice to the painter Andrea de Verrocchio. Verrocchio's influence on Leonardo was of sheer importance. In Verrocchilo's workshop Leonardo met some of the greatest painters of the time: Bottecelli, Perungino, and Lorenzo di Credi.
Leonardo was one of the greatest of the High
Renaissance. He helped advance the study of anatomy, astronomy, and
civil engineering. Leonardo had a notebook with over 13,000 pages of
notes and drawings. In his notebooks he drew many modern day inventions
such as a helicopter, machine guns, an armored tank, cluster bombs, a
submarine, and a car powered by a spring. Also when he stayed in the
Vatican, he made a type of solar energy by using concave mirrors to
heat water.
Leonardo also made many
paintings. Only 17 of his paintings, and none
of his staues survived. His two most famous paintings are: "The Last
Supper" and "Mona Lisa". There is a lot of controversy concerning the
"Mona Lisa" such as, "Is she smiling or frowning?" and, "Who was she?".
