Background Info

   

    Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in a farmhouse in Anchiano, Italy. His father was a public notary and his mother was the daughter of a farmer. Because of the big difference in social class his father left and remarried. Da Vinci stayed in Anchiano until he was five and then moved to Vinci. When Leonardo was 14 he moved with his father to Florence and became apprentice to the painter Andrea de Verrocchio. Verrocchio's influence on Leonardo was of sheer importance. In Verrocchilo's workshop Leonardo met some of the greatest painters of the time: Bottecelli, Perungino, and Lorenzo di Credi.


Accomplishments, Achievements, and Works of Art


    Leonardo was one of the greatest of the High Renaissance. He helped advance the study of anatomy, astronomy, and civil engineering. Leonardo had a notebook with over 13,000 pages of notes and drawings. In his notebooks he drew many modern day inventions such as a helicopter, machine guns, an armored tank, cluster bombs, a submarine, and a car powered by a spring. Also when he stayed in the Vatican, he made a type of solar energy by using concave mirrors to heat water.
Leonardo also made many paintings. Only 17 of his paintings, and none of his staues survived. His two most famous paintings are: "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa". There is a lot of controversy concerning the "Mona Lisa" such as, "Is she smiling or frowning?" and, "Who was she?".

How Da Vinci Affected the Renaissance

    Leonardo played a big role in the Renaissance. He made many advancements in science, math, anatomy, and architcture. He made some of the most famous pictures at the time. He was also a very good sculptor and inventor who thought of ideas that we have today such as a helicopter. Leonardo was a very complex man who thought of many great ideas and had many great works.
