LEONARDO da VINCI
BIOGRAPHY
Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 to a wealthy notary and a peasant women. His parents divorced at a young age. They both remarried and eventually he had 17 half brothers and sisters. As a young man he rapidly progressed socially and intellectually even though he moved a lot. In 1460 his family finally settled down in Florence were he became a painter. But, as many young men back then he wanted to make "new machines" for the "new world." Unlike many other artists he didn't create that many painting but also did drawings and inventions. But he was also was one of the first to master drapery. In 1466 he apprenticed to Adrea del Verrocchio. After becoming an accomplished apprentice he entered in the painter guild of Florence in 1472. After 6 years he finally became an independent master. In 1507 he was named court painter to King Louis 11 of France. Leonardo only did 3 portraits, and out of those one survives which might be one of his most famous paintings, the Mona Lisa. Leonardo was a very accomplished man and was celebrated as a painter, sculptor, engineer, scientist, and musician. After many years of work and accomplishments he died  in 1519.
