Albrecht Durer was born in 1471, second child of eighteen to
a master goldsmith, who was a native of Hungary. His father went Westward
and settled in a town known as Nuremberg. At the age of thirteen, Durer made
a self-portrait of himself simply by looking at a mirror. He was a German painter
and a theorist; his watercolor techniques marked him as one of the first European
landscape artists and was considered one of the most important figures of the Northern
Renaissance. His paintings were similar to those of Leonardo Da Vinci's works and
they were established when he was still in his twenties.

Durer married Agnes Frey, a local merchant's
daughter on July 9, 1494, but she was
assaulted by one of Durer's friends later on. Only three of his many
children lived to be adults.
He was inspired by Andre Gide, another painter in his time. Durer did not wish to follow in his father's
footsteps to become a goldsmith himslef, but rather become a painter. His father knew Durer had talent
so he put aside his dreams of his son becoming a goldsmith. Durer apprenticed to Micheal Wohlgemut
for three years. In 1525, Durer sketched a nightare he had, three years before his death in 1528.
